The word Palace derives from the Latin world palatium, from Mount Palatino, where Augustus had his magnificent house built.

Right after the earthquake from 1755, the first Baron of Porto Covo, Jacinto Fernandes Bandeira, built his house in S.Domingos Street starting the creation of the Lapa district.

In 1870, the succeeding Viscount built for one of his sons a beautiful house in the Lapa district, later it was sold to the Counts of Valencas, who in 1883 decided to transform it into a Palace.

The Palace was famous by the glow of its social gatherings and balls, attended by the elegant aristocracy of Lisbon. It had a beautiful ballroom decorated with paintings by Columbano (today the Columbano room).

Important figures of the History of Portugal are connected to the Palace, like the Viscount of Valencas and the Minister Hintze Ribeiro. For most of the 20th century, it stayed a family house until the family sold it and it became a luxury hotel.

The Palace is situated on a hill top at the heart of Lisbon’s most elegant suburb, the Embassy district, close to the city’s best shopping centre.

The gastronomic restaurant ‘Ristorante Hotel Cipriani’ offers vibe Venetian cuisine served in an ambience of elegance and charm. Chef Franco Luise, of Italian nationality, was transferred from the world famous Hotel Cipriani in Venice, where he was sous-chef to become the exclusive Chef of this respected hotel.

Lapa Palace is the only hotel in Lisbon to offer an outdoor heated swimming pool set within tranquil gardens. The hotels health club encompasses an indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room, fully equipped gym and spa offering the latest in therapies and treatments to satisfy all needs.
